Top 5 Reasons WOMEN Should Try Yoga & Pilates

It’s an awesome workout: Pilates and Yoga are strength training practices. You can do a lot with gravity and your own body weight.
You want to live like the rich and famous: Pilates has been made widely popular by stars such as Cindy Crawford, Julia Roberts, Courtney Cox & Madonna. You too, can live the life of a rock diva or supermodel.
You want to become a fat burning machine: Pilates & Yoga build muscle, enabling the body to more efficiently burn calories. Muscle also takes up less space in your jeans!
You want to see if Joseph Pilates was right: Word on the street is that he said in 10 sessions you would feel the difference, in 20 sessions you would see the difference, and in 30 sessions you would have a whole new body. Take the challenge!
It just may improve your Zumba®: Pilates has been embraced by the dance community for good reason. Eliminate the two left feet phenomenon so you can boogie down in Zumba® class!!

Top 5 Reasons MEN Should Try Yoga & Pilates

You want to get ripped: Pilates and Yoga target the core muscles and are a great way to get started on that six pack you’ve always wanted.
Your golf swing needs help: Many professional athletes, including Tiger Woods and the San Francisco 49ers are jumping on the Pilates band wagon. Pilates helps to initiate movements from the core, building power into all that you do. Real men do Pilates!
You’re stressed out: Pilates & Yoga improve circulation allowing oxygen to move more freely throughout the body. Stretching releases tension in the muscles and leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to deal with whatever life throws your way.
You’re shrinking: Gravity pushes down on the spine all day long. Pilates & Yoga work to lengthen and decompress the spine resulting in better posture, restoring you to tall, dark and handsome....no promises on the dark and handsome part.
You like a challenge: Pilates and Yoga build strength and can challenge even the strongest athlete. Doug gives it two thumbs up!

Q & A - Ask Velvet

What is the difference between Yoga & Pilates?
~Yoga has been around for thousands of years. Pilates is about 90 years old, only recently
becoming widely known thru celebrity endorsements.
~Yoga postures are typically held for a period of time, while Pilates incorporates slow,
   controlled movements between postures.
~Pilates works to build core strength and lengthen the spine, while Yoga builds overall
strength with a goal of uniting mind and body.
~Both disciplines improve strength, flexibility, and body awareness, leaving the body
   feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

What Yoga tradition do you teach?
My style is eclectic rather than one specific tradition. You will clearly see my Kripalu influences, though I gravitate toward power Yoga and vinyasa flow. I am a product of many teachers which is helpful in bringing something different to each class.

What do you like about Yoga & Pilates?
I enjoy the challenge and then ending class with a well-deserved relaxation. It's deceptive when you peek in the window of a class. The lights are low, the music is soft, and people are lying on the floor. You think, "How hard can that be"? Quite honestly, it's the hardest thing I've ever done! The great thing is that Yoga and Pilates can be modified based on the needs of the participants, allowing all levels the opportunity to experience the benefits.

Testimonials

"I am a senior who used running for fitness for over 35 years. I stopped running last year due to hip discomfort. The Pilates & Yoga exercises have minimized/eliminated the hip problem to the point that short distance running is now again comfortable and enjoyable."
-Gavin, 72

"When I first started taking your Pilates class on Thursday evenings, there were moves that I couldn't dream of doing, but with each class and your suggestions of trying a more advanced position, I began noticing that I could do it! I love taking your Pilates/Yoga class. It helps me unwind from my work week. It puts me in the weekend mode a day early and gets me ready for my long training sessions for the half marathon that I am doing in September. Since I have been taking the class, I have really noticed a big difference in my core strength as well as my flexibility. I think I am almost as flexible as I was in my 20's. I love it!!!!
